I decided to explain my topic in a photostory, with pictures from The Sims 2 and some that I made myself. You can clearly make out which is which. Satellite Falls

Characters:

It was a sunny morning in Veronaville, and the sun was shining bright as Grandpa Randy walked outside to get the morning paper. Suddenly, the clouds got his eye, and he sat down, taking a moment to appreciate nature. Something caught his eye and he looked at it, and before he knew what it was, an uncommissioned satellite hit him.

Fourtunately, Randy had finished up his will the day before. Unfortunately, for some reason, much of the items and amounts were in fraction forms. Marty read the will to the family. Some of the things that stuck out were:

(adding)
- "..my only son, Marty, will get 2/8 + 4/8 of the shares to my peanut company."
- "..my daughter in law, Ida, may have 3/2 + 4/3 of the apple pie i never ate."
- "..my grandson, Marcus, will get 1 2/3 + 2/6 of my 4 baseball gloves."

(subtracting)
- "..2/5 - 1/5 of the cheesecake in the fridge can go to Ida.."
- "...9/4 - 2/1 of my pizza in the fridge may go to Marcus."
- "..and about my $500 000 life savings, 1 1/5 - 1/2 of it will go to Marty."

Just then, an alien emailed them, and apologized for killing Randy. Marty replied, "It's all ok, it's how he wanted to go." The alien said "We would like to help you with his 'will' or whatever you humans call it. I wonder if a knowledge of types of fractions can help in anyway?"
"That's funny. All of it is in fractions. I assume that you have went here to learn the basics?" Marty answered.
And as the alien agreed Marty explained the rest of the will.

"Well firstly, there's 2/8 + 4/8 of the shares to the peanut company. Since both the denominators are the same, or 'common', we can add easily. 2 + 4 = 6, so we have 6/8, or simplified, it would be 3/4. So I'd have 3/4 of his company.

Next is the last apple pie he never got to eat, and 3/2 + 4/3 of it goes to Ida. We have to find the common denominator for 3/2 and 4/3. There are two ways to do this.

One way is finding the factors. The other is mutliplying the denominators and each numerator by the opposite denominator.

<---First way | Second way --->

So we can now add properly. 9+ 8 = 17, so we have 17/6. Finally we convert to a mixed number: 2 5/6

Now for the baseball gloves. We know Randy had 4. We need to find 1 2/3 + 2/6 of his four gloves. We can treat 1 2/3 as a regular fraction. That means we have to make 2/3 common with 2/6.

So Marcus gets 2 baseball gloves, or 1/2 of the gloves.

2/5 - 1/5 of the cheesecake he made goes to Marcus. This is simple, since the denominators are already common, and we don't need to borrow. 2/5 - 1/5 = 1/3.
Marcus gets 1/5 of the cheesecake.

9/4 - 2/1 of Randy's pizza goes to Marcus. We must make these denominators common first.
for 2/1, 1 x 4 4 is 4, and 2 x 4 is 8. so it is now 9/4 - 8/4. 9 - 8 = 1 so we get 1/4.
Marcus gets 1/4 of the pizza.

Of the $500 000, 1 1/5 - 1/2 goes to Marty. First let's find 1 1/5 - 1/2. Again we must find the common denominator.

We see that the first number's numerator is smaller than the other, so we must borrow from the whole number and add a whole to the numerator. In this case, the whole is 10, so 2+10 = 12, so we end up with 12/10 - 5/10 which is 7/10.
So Marty gets 7/10 of $500 000, which is $350 000. (500 000 / 100 x 20 = 350000)

So that should cover most of it, huh alien? Funny how the rest of the will is clearly stated..YES. I get his lucky rubber ducky!"
"What is a rubber ducky?" asked the alien.
"I'll show you..." continued Randy.
